Just a quick thought...

As a kid we used to do a lot of handline fishing off the piers at Santa Monica and Malibu which gave me a lasting respect for what a bit of line, a weight, and a couple of hooks with some bait could accomplish...

Simple works and don't let anybody tell you different.

Lately I've been reading  "Simple Fly Fishing". It's an enjoyable and thought provoking read. It's also been a great aid in a push aboard "So It Goes" to reach the next plateau of simplification both in the fishing/spearfishing department and just stuff in general... In terms of payoff it just might be the best money I've spent on a book all year.

On the merits of simple fishing gear I've noticed (over far too many years) that folks with lots of expensive gear tend to fish a lot less than folks with simpler and more affordable gear. Of course, the more you fish the more fish you catch being a fact of life should tell you all you need to know about being a successful catcher of fish aboard a sailboat.
