These days it's a whole different story.</p><p>A while back I did <a href="http://fishingundersail.blogspot.com/2009/03/any-fool-can-catch-fish-guide-basic-kit.html" target="_blank">a post</a> on putting together a kit for fishing from sailboats and I got enough positive feedback to put together a sailboat fishing kit to save folks the hassle of putting one together themselves. The other driving force was since I knew all of the best deals on productive lures I thought I could come up with a much more affordable kit as well.</p><p>The problem I run into is that putting together an inexpensive kit that includes all one needs winds up being a lot more expensive than you'd think. The idea of a handline based fishing kit made to order including a handline, snubber, a bird or flasher, a basic set of rigged trolling lures and some miscellaneous extras for fifty dollars just seems nuts. That said, there are a few kits out there which are even more expensive albeit less complete so that $50 price point seems to be as frugal as possible.</p><p>Still that's a long way from that dollar handline and a handful of dead anchovies.</p><p>Of course, if you think that's interesting drop me a line with your cruising plans and I'd love to put together a kit based on what you want to catch.<br /></p>RLWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03722124194083306429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488977981886271032.post-90687561335578281222022-09-24T15:35:00.001-04:002022-09-24T15:35:26.487-04:00Worth a watch...<div style="padding: 56.25% 0px 0px; position: relative;"><iframe allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/752336182?h=f9eeeacc3a&title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" style="height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%;"></iframe></div><script src="https://player.vimeo.com/api/player.js"></script>

Fishing for salmon up north and tuna in southern California were the backbone of my angling education. <p></p><p>The fact that fishing techniques for salmon and tuna differed greatly always seemed a little weird, but as a mostly dedicated follower of fashion in those days, I accepted the mindset that salmon and tuna were just too different to use the same technique with.</p><p>So, what does that have to do with the RCKstar salmon jig pictured above?</p><p>Well, it's a salmon jig... right?</p><p>The thing is that the first thing that I thought when I saw this particular lure was ...</p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>Boy howdy that's going to catch mahi!</i></p><p>Why not? It's got the right color that in my experience mahi goes nuts for. Throw it behind a flasher and you'll have a killer combo for mahi and, as tuna tend to eat whatever mahi do, you're more than likely to catch tuna with it as well. Sounds like a workable solution to me.<br /></p><p>The problem arises in that a flasher with a jig or fly is entrenched in the realm of salmon-only rigs and would be considered heresy to use such a rig here in the Caribbean.</p><p>But hey, heretical generally works for me and, as I'm doing my best to come up with non-plastic alternatives for my sailboat fishing kits, we'll see how it goes.</p><p>More soonish on the subject.<br /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p><br /> <br /></p>RLWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03722124194083306429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488977981886271032.post-38171357638012839982022-03-05T13:01:00.000-04:002022-03-05T13:01:11.684-04:00a flyfishing film I'm looking forward to...<p> </p><div style="padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;"><iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/665362481?h=2ed3133982" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div><script src="https://player.vimeo.com/api/player.js"></script>

The fact is that there are any number of ways to catch fish that don't require you to drag a lure or bait behind the boat.</p><p>For instance, being hove to and jigging is a great way to catch any number of species of fish. As it happens, <a href="https://hogylures.com" target="_blank">Hogy Lures</a> has an excellent <a href="https://hogylures.com/pages/download-tuna-jigging-playbook" target="_blank">free downloadable PDF</a> guide available on jigging for tuna that you really should take a look at.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj2btnss5Tig6X-ti2L1e2kIVb6L6gy6dLE-AQKMqvGb8qxH_cN5g7VSi9LXxuL_3TLcHH6XjLEiSWPQvyY0U5KI7De56RlPdCttMAs863rsjkgHQfo_vxT3B7pk-EklTQvbZ6i6eHk_gr_o2yeZ5ovsLd8fh9XBbSVFRPs16BwryjeCOtYSvO3QZmY=s522" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="522" data-original-width="404" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj2btnss5Tig6X-ti2L1e2kIVb6L6gy6dLE-AQKMqvGb8qxH_cN5g7VSi9LXxuL_3TLcHH6XjLEiSWPQvyY0U5KI7De56RlPdCttMAs863rsjkgHQfo_vxT3B7pk-EklTQvbZ6i6eHk_gr_o2yeZ5ovsLd8fh9XBbSVFRPs16BwryjeCOtYSvO3QZmY=w310-h400" width="310" /></a></div><br />It's a game changer. <br /><p></p><p><br /></p>RLWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03722124194083306429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488977981886271032.post-43286375214937788332022-01-16T16:33:00.000-04:002022-01-16T16:33:34.116-04:00A $20 Tenkara set up?<p>Apparently so!<br /></p>

It was an impulse buy as I'd long thought that one of the little mini ice fishing rod and reel combos would make a great little rod for fishing from the dinghy or using it as a dedicated <a href="https://www.tailchaserlures.com/store/Bait-Catching-Rigs-c106994682" target="_blank">Sabiki</a> rig rod/reel comb</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqTfN3Ga8kJcHVNtbSasYeNJNVaAaO6a3_cP81QvxgXJCS8Y9tvCelFrWNh04b3OD-k65mArMhSbULyMwTWO_VaFAD_huJ_vSTRN5harkrYO5WGdLfOlUALcoIyfmQCUT76EfCggzZdao/s800/Ugly_Stik_Dock_Runner_Spinning_Combo.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="172" data-original-width="800" height="86" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqTfN3Ga8kJcHVNtbSasYeNJNVaAaO6a3_cP81QvxgXJCS8Y9tvCelFrWNh04b3OD-k65mArMhSbULyMwTWO_VaFAD_huJ_vSTRN5harkrYO5WGdLfOlUALcoIyfmQCUT76EfCggzZdao/w400-h86/Ugly_Stik_Dock_Runner_Spinning_Combo.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><div style="text-align: left;">Recently I saw a video by Hey Skipper (one of my favorite fishing channels) who tried to break one...</div><div style="text-align: left;"> </div>

They seem to make a lot of sense as they're both effective and affordable.<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC4VlRpsLcwOT7Xel1LBJdwQYciiA7StigmVqpFomMrtH4SwG9h6FxuLmXxrkyKImGEmX5B4sfr66Qj4tDJvoRqY5z4488xE8BQYuudR8Bps6kdKiIJWeBSzb0EtGPi5sc9y8px1pc9Pw/s1600/jigheadsquid.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC4VlRpsLcwOT7Xel1LBJdwQYciiA7StigmVqpFomMrtH4SwG9h6FxuLmXxrkyKImGEmX5B4sfr66Qj4tDJvoRqY5z4488xE8BQYuudR8Bps6kdKiIJWeBSzb0EtGPi5sc9y8px1pc9Pw/w400-h266/jigheadsquid.jpg" width="400" /></a></div> <p></p><p>This lure, a <a href="https://www.b2squid.com/product/j1-1-pack-of-5-b2-jig-head-squid-1-oz/" target="_blank">Jig Head Squid by B2 Squid</a> would really flesh out a sailboat's quiver. Seriously, it contains just about everything someone getting into spearfishing needs to know in an excellently arranged and understandable manner.</p><p>My only issue is that I feel it really should cover triggerless (polespear & Hawaiian sling) spearfishing as well. I expect they'll get around to adding triggerless content as time goes on as they sell some great polespears and a lot of the information in the Academy section is applicable to anyone using a polespear or a sling. Still, a little dedicated polespear and sling content would be a welcome addition.</p><p>Definitely the <a href="https://neptonics.com/spearfishing-academy/" target="_blank">Neptonics Spearfishing Academy pages</a> deserve to be bookmarked as your go to reference for spearfishing information.</p><p>Just sayin' <br /></p><p><br /></p>RLWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03722124194083306429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488977981886271032.post-43587610197099647832021-06-23T16:46:00.001-04:002021-06-23T17:02:26.188-04:00a real good deal...<p>One of the purveyors of fishing gear I generally buy stuff from is <a href="https://www.fishandsave.com" target="_blank">Fish & Save</a> as they offer good gear, great prices, and ship stuff quickly. They also, if you're on their mailing list send out their deals for the day and let you know when they have sales going on. I'd say it's safe to say that most of the fishing gear I buy is stuff on sale at Fish& Save.</p><p>Like this morning...</p><p>Fish & Save has their own line of gear FAS and today it's on sale and, as I needed a couple of things I was inclined to buy a few lures.</p><p>In my experience the three of the five most productive lures for folks fishing from sailboats are the Cedar plug, Drone spoon and a plastic squid. As it happens F&S had their Drone Spoon and Cedar plugs on sale.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOYDorlBYLg-s8zTE34QjtzJ1w8KghWPENIFQG5dYa2Lmr7F0gL8dRRTJQNmIaAYD32ErmOCRLKD4j4V6h61-CfMLRJ5D1aWcwOy3Jqd0-Ybdko66A5ldVZSPuCNK7ULdyd01Ylpu8Geo/s1024/cedarplug.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOYDorlBYLg-s8zTE34QjtzJ1w8KghWPENIFQG5dYa2Lmr7F0gL8dRRTJQNmIaAYD32ErmOCRLKD4j4V6h61-CfMLRJ5D1aWcwOy3Jqd0-Ybdko66A5ldVZSPuCNK7ULdyd01Ylpu8Geo/w400-h300/cedarplug.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p> The <a href="https://www.fishandsave.com/?&show_details=284012&cat=206&sort=7&manufacturer=FAS" target="_blank">FAS cedar plug</a> rigged with a 100# test leader and an8/0 hook was all of $3.99.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCpRKNge-x5JCQkffL5WKnXSSEupAd12Z470zcauKzN3N_QzN6Yo97gh5rBRMKBwQpE6Ycf_wK4jc_1V1JdFLoXa1x7NAle3qTTQfmn_ZRr_hye-o2bl7ANBi28AQchgjYpYcuGh1ZoUo/s1024/dronespoon.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCpRKNge-x5JCQkffL5WKnXSSEupAd12Z470zcauKzN3N_QzN6Yo97gh5rBRMKBwQpE6Ycf_wK4jc_1V1JdFLoXa1x7NAle3qTTQfmn_ZRr_hye-o2bl7ANBi28AQchgjYpYcuGh1ZoUo/w400-h300/dronespoon.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p> The <a href="https://www.fishandsave.com/?&show_details=286382&cat=206&sort=7&manufacturer=FAS" target="_blank">FAS Drone spoon</a> cost all of $2.99.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTjRf3z_jlRrtFWdoBoO8oZLFu_S6vOIxciLG21m-jNkyzUQnXSlUS3j4mW74mdzMLoaMeagZUF0DI2QKEroKrOepLgdjbnUZUwAjIhQJz4cXixVYr4QHp2tEwPdp4vunMUr0KkYQfaTY/s1024/danielsonsquid.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTjRf3z_jlRrtFWdoBoO8oZLFu_S6vOIxciLG21m-jNkyzUQnXSlUS3j4mW74mdzMLoaMeagZUF0DI2QKEroKrOepLgdjbnUZUwAjIhQJz4cXixVYr4QHp2tEwPdp4vunMUr0KkYQfaTY/w400-h300/danielsonsquid.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As I do my own squids and was not all that excited by the FAS squids I didn't bother but did notice that they also sell the <a href="https://www.fishandsave.com/?&show_details=217665&cat=206&keywords=squid&sort=7&manufacturer=Danielson&type=201" target="_blank">Danielson rigged squid</a> on sale for $1.59 which will pretty much do the job.</div><p></p><p>So, that's a total of $8.57 for a selection of lures that will catch fish at sailboat speeds. After all, the whole idea of fishing for folks on sailboats is really about putting dinner on the table.</p><br />
<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }</style><div class="embed-container"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6t4VtoyiPPo"></iframe></div>
<p>As a side business, Hey Skipper has become a <a href="https://www.heyskipperfishing.com/salty-baits/" target="_blank">purveyor of salted bait</a> and that makes a lot of sense to me as a box of salted squiddy bits, shrimp, and shellfish would go a long way to make fishing a whole lot more productive.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYns1ofXOSYs1IWixhzkbc3lbwQlCyG946yNRQ94zrgy1LmrS03zMmUcoKn9OIx7oBMqmmEysjvsyS5KAKlnq_XAPPXBDRl0-j09ujqSmkFOM9YSOuhYisdSQt-kjbmY-U3sFyCPzMN5g/s600/allinonebundle.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYns1ofXOSYs1IWixhzkbc3lbwQlCyG946yNRQ94zrgy1LmrS03zMmUcoKn9OIx7oBMqmmEysjvsyS5KAKlnq_XAPPXBDRl0-j09ujqSmkFOM9YSOuhYisdSQt-kjbmY-U3sFyCPzMN5g/w400-h400/allinonebundle.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<p>I'll also point out that the whole salting critters and putting them aside to use as bait later is hardly a new idea and well within the abilities to duplicate by even the most tyro angler aboard a sail boat if you wanted to go, shall we say, a more frugal route.<br /></p>RLWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03722124194083306429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488977981886271032.post-15152895725595867502021-05-16T19:22:00.000-04:002021-05-16T19:22:18.874-04:00an affordable solution...<p><a href="http://www.tailchaserlures.com/" target="_blank">Tailchaser</a> (a place I buy lures from) has an interesting category of lures based on the concept of predator/prey that makes a whole lot of sense.
